It began on an empty field on Lentpjūvės street
The company name is not marketing. It came from its founder, Jonas Varkalys — which is why Midsummer is still the company's name day.
1992 — the decision
In the spring of 1992, at the annual meeting of the Plungė state land-reclamation enterprise in Rietavas, those who believed things could be changed from the ground up were asked to stay in the hall. Eighty people stayed. That is how VĮ Jonis was founded — the first private reclamation company in Lithuania.
The first years were land drainage, water and sewer lines, and farm access tracks. The base was a workshop, a store and a dispatch hut the founders built themselves on Lentpjūvės street.

How the work grew
Reclamation
Land drainage, field drains and ditches — what the crews knew best, and still do.
Roads and bridges
District road maintenance, culvert and bridge repair, later street reconstruction and asphalt surfacing.
Railways
First the formation earthworks for railways, then the track itself. Membership of Gelpa, the association of Lithuanian railway service companies.
Heritage and buildings
Certification for cultural heritage, industrial buildings and utility network works.
Today
The business is carried on by UAB Plungės Jonis, incorporated in 2009 and formerly named UAB Plungės Jonis-S, company code 302457787. It carries the name, the yard in Plungė and the same line of work: roads, railways, drainage, networks.
The traditions did not change either — the Christmas evening for staff and their families, the annual awards for the best people of the year, and Midsummer.
